Below is a list of procedures and
diagnostic tests that are commonly performed or ordered by a
neurologist. Some of these tests are performed at our office,
and others are performed at an outside facility. A brief description
is provided for each procedure/test.
Consultation:
A consultation is an initial evaluation done at the request
of a referring physician. During this visit the doctor will
take a complete medical history with focus on the presenting
problem, and then perform a complete neurological examination.
A detailed plan of evaluation, testing and treatment is developed
at the end of the consultation.
EMG:
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are
tests that measure muscle and nerve function. These tests are
performed using small electrical currents for testing the nerves
and a small needle probe used to study the activity in the muscles.
This test is generally performed in the office and takes about
30 minutes.
EEG:
An EEG measures brain wave activity by placing electrodes on
the scalp. It is usually done at the hospital EEG lab and it
takes about an hour.
Sleep Study:
A sleep study is an overnight test in which various bodily functions,
such as brain waves (EEG), breathing, heart rhythm and leg movements
are monitored.
CPAP:
One of several treatments for Sleep Apnea, in which a small
amount of air pressure is applied to the airway to prevent its
collapse.
MRI:
An imaging study which uses magnetic fields and radio waves
to produce highly detailed pictures of structures inside the
body.
CT Scan:
An imaging study which uses X-rays to produce pictures of internal
body structures.
Lumbar Puncture:
A procedure to obtain spinal fluid for analysis.
